 New snow has arrived.  I-40 was closed overnight.  According to the state website, it's now open near us, although dangerous.  However, in the absence of the sounds from the interstate (a little over a mile away), most people, including truckers, are opting for safety.





 We've been out to shovel twice.

Yesterday I installed this old Necchi in one of my two treadle tables. I've been oiling it and working to get it unfrozen off and on for several months.

This machine had been sitting in someone's dusty garage for several years.  It belonged to her grandmother, and she wasn't quite sure how it had come into her possession. 5:00 a.m. Monday: a phone call from Sweet Teen's school saying school would be delayed two hours.
She finished finals last week, and last Friday was my last school day before Christmas break, so other than our sleep-in morning being disturbed, it was okay.

Last Friday there were multiple accidents on I-40, but even bailing off I-40 and then Old 66, it took me two and half hours to get home.  Saturday morning we were greeted by some lovely sights, including sunshine.

This shade is Bright Gold 80137.  It's the last gold on their chart at the above link.  It's one of my favorites because it looks great on a huge range of fabric styles and colors.  It comes in 1,000 yd and 10,000 yard spools.  Lovely shine and glisten that makes the quilting even more beautiful.  All my machines love it.

 What is this mess?  The trimmings from squaring up 48 half-square triangles.  Next time I'll use my old Omnigrid triangle rulers.  I forgot how much I dislike trimming squares.

Homecoming was this past weekend.
This evening she was reminding me that in the "old days", i.e., grade school, when she earned C's and D's, I didn't get angry with her, but I'd say things like, "Your value as a human being has nothing to do with your grades.  Are those the grades you want?"

I do love fireworks, despite the fact that our residents buy so many that the 4th of July fireworks last for hours and hours.

My original plan was to quilt a curvy feather that included not only the blue solid but also the two adjacent borders.  But when I tried that, it was immediately clear that the feather wouldn't even be recognized if it extended into those borders, so I ripped it out and placed them just in the blue.

Instead of the medium blue, I wanted to use a rich Kona blue--but I've either misplaced it or used it for something else.  


For the backing I used a stripe that looks a lot like a French ticking, only it's closer to broadcloth weight.  I liked the idea of using that for a quilt with a French name.

 All it needed was the binding.

Binding is on and it was passed on to Mary, who will hand sew the back of the binding.
Then it's destined for a beneficiary of our prayer quilt ministry.

 The arcs in this strip are the only thing I marked for quilting.  I used a small plate, marked the plate for the beginning and end of the arc and just moved the plate along.  Everything else on this quilt was stitched with no prior markings.

I decided to name it Orleans Baroque.  The print is a Hoffman fabric named Windsor--I'm pretty sure I purchased it in 2000.  I think it looks a lot more French than English.

A couple of years ago I was given the left over fabrics from someone's Mark Twain quilt. First, let me be clear that I would not do this in most instances.  Normally, I would just fold up the batting and get a larger piece. This is a Jones Hand Machine--the label says so.  I think now it's more commonly just called a Jones Hand Crank.
The last owner's dad picked it up in London at the end of WWII, took it to South Carolina, didn't use it, and let it sit on a shelf for at least 40 years.

Had to make a run to another quilting store for more background fabrics so purchased the ones in the lower half of the picture.
Pieced a few Hole-in-the-Barndoor blocks.

Pieced a few pinwheels and a double pinwheel.

Having to drive to a town and find wi-fi access is not my favorite way of doing this, but that's the only option I have right now.
