Last Friday there were multiple accidents on I-40, but even bailing off I-40 and then Old 66, it took me two and half hours to get home.  Saturday morning we were greeted by some lovely sights, including sunshine. Homecoming was this past weekend. This evening she was reminding me that in the "old days", i.e., grade school, when she earned C's and D's, I didn't get angry with her, but I'd say things like, "Your value as a human being has nothing to do with your grades.  Are those the grades you want?" So glad to be able to post so much progress on Ms. Vernice's quilt....  The arcs in this strip are the only thing I marked for quilting.  I used a small plate, marked the plate for the beginning and end of the arc and just moved the plate along.  Everything else on this quilt was stitched with no prior markings. I've had more time than I expected to work on the quilt from the last post.  It's being tickled with lots of feathers. I am so happy that I've finished the baby quilt before the arrival of the baby!  I did have to go back and hand sew places I missed on the back of the binding.....oh, well...... I had measured and labeled a fairly large piece of batting.  However, as I neared the end of the quilt, I realized that I was a few inches short. First, let me be clear that I would not do this in most instances.  Normally, I would just fold up the batting and get a larger piece. Love antique ones too--but I don't own any of those, and so far, I'm quite happy with my vintage machines. This is the machine I'm now using for most of my quilting... It's from 1935 and has a very pretty faceplate.  I chose it because class 15 machines have high capacity vertical bobbins.  Many people just set the stitch length to zero and attach a darning foot or a spiral wire when they quilt.

I'm looking for an answer about how to lower feed dogs on my Singer 15-88 from 1935.  According to the instruction booklet for this and similar machines, loosening the turn screw on the right should lower feed dogs, but when I do that, the feed dogs continue to hold their position. I pieced this 45" quilt before I went to TN and quilted it while there. You can right-click on any photo and open it in a new tab or new window to see more details. What I learned from this quilt is that when I make another, I'll use nine-inch blocks instead of twelve-inch blocks.  There are a couple details of the quilting that I'll change too. There's a little shop on the Maynardville Highway (the extension of Broadway as it goes north from Knoxville) called Chintzy Rose Antiques and Tea Room.  That's where I found the lovely little shelf/storage unit that is going to sit next to my lovely lavender Laura Ashley slipcovered chair-and-a-half. More music fabrics that Alex picked up at the AQS show yesterday.  They'll have to be for the back of the quilt because the front is finished except for the border. And.....an example of the reason the Smokies are called the Smokies.... Happy Quilting, friends.

Still piecing Alex's music quilts.  Am working on flying geese and four patches.  Will try to get in-progress pictures because I'm not ready to set the blocks yet.  Hopefully, I can take pictures and post within the next couple of days. When Daphne Grieg brought her quilts into the U.S. for Quilt Market in Minneapolis, a U.S. custom agent was afraid she would sell them, so she was forced to write "Sample" on her quilts with a marker the agent required her to use, thus defacing her quilts!!
